A sinter plant is a crucial facility in the steelmaking industry that converts fine iron ore dust—along with flux materials and metallurgical waste—into hard, porous lumps called sinter. Blast furnaces require coarse, lumpy materials so that hot gases can flow upward through the charge. If you were to dump fine iron ore dust directly into a blast furnace, it would choke the airflow and smother the furnace. Sintering solves this problem while also providing a way to recycle valuable waste materials generated elsewhere in the steel mill.
